If you haven’t been there yet, the Herb Guenther Scenic Overlook along the river in the East Wetlands is definitely an eye-opener. With comfy benches about 25 feet above the river, the overlook offers 360-degree views of Prison Hill, the Ocean-to-Ocean Bridge, St. Thomas Indian Mission, Picacho Peak, Castle Dome, the Gila Mountains, the wetlands — even the mall and the 16th Street water towers.
To get there, walk from Gateway Park under the Ocean-to-Ocean Bridge, then upstream about half a mile. You also can access the path to the overlook from Riverside Park below the prison (there is a small parking lot there, along with maps of the trail).
